Bill to Prevent Opioid Overdose Deaths Heads to Governor Newsom’s Desk

Law enforcement officials, behavioral health advocates, families affected by overdoses, and addiction medicine professionals in California are urging Governor Gavin Newsom to sign Senate Bill 641 into law.

The bill, co-sponsored The California Association of Alcohol and Drug Program Executives (CAADPE) and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, aims to expand the availability of FDA-approved overdose reversal medications, including those effective against synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Fentanyl is responsible for a growing number of overdose deaths in the state.

The bill seeks to update the Naloxone Distribution Project (NDP) to address this crisis, with the NDP credited with preventing nearly 182,000 opioid overdose deaths in California since its inception in 2018. For more information, click here.
